Editorial Review:
On May 14, 1948, under the stewardship of President Harry S. Truman, the United States became the first nation to recognize the State of Israel -- just moments after sovereignty had been declared in Jerusalem. But it was hardly a foregone conclusion that America would welcome the creation of this new country. While acknowledging this as one of his proudest moments, Truman also admitted that no issue was "more controversial or more complex than the problem of Israel."
Impeccably researched and brilliantly told, based on never-before-used archival material, A Safe Haven is a suspenseful, moment-by-moment re-creation of this crossroads in U.S.-Israeli relations and Middle Eastern politics.

A Safe Haven:
This is a very well documented history of a courageous action by one of our best, and most underrated presidents. Although it is a historical work, it reads like a novel. On the substance, it is remarkable to look back on how Israel was created and the forces that were then aligned against it and see that not much has changed in 60 years. The Arabs are as intransigent as ever, the British continue to be anti-semetic and pro-Arab and the US State Department and the Secretary of State are as duplicitous as... more info
precise and iinformative.:
this could potentially be a boring book because of the mass of characters and facts involved. instead it is exciting and well researched. my only objection is the picture of Truman and his boyhood friend, broadly smiling and walking down the street while Truman is carrying a picture of a nuclear bomb explosion, obviously in Japan. How foreign policy is really made:
So many books on the making of foreign policy start at the outcome and then show the linear path that produced specific decision or action. Radosh takes a different approach and provides a detailed analysis of the whole process including the blind alleys, detours and dumb mistakes made by the various parties. I picked up this book because of a strong interest in the history of Israel. I am recommending it to friends and colleagues as an outstanding case study of politics and the formation of foreign policy. Bland writing:
The subject matter was the reason I purchased the book. Very informative information, but writing was very bland. The book is wrtitten in a text book style, so really hard to " get into".
Overall, I was disappointed the way the writer described the events, although if you are looking for a history book, I suppose that this will suffice. Similar Products:
